Clifford Chance seeks an experienced business development and marketing professional to manage and lead its business development and marketing strategy and operations for South East Asia.

The South East Asia Business Development & Marketing team is responsible for helping partners to develop the firm’s business, build its relationships with existing and potential clients and to manage the firm’s market profile. Your focus will be to deliver the highest client value through client and market strategies as well as brand, communications and marketing.

You will be a critical member and leader of a nine-person Singapore-based team that works across South East Asia with specific oversight of certain practices. You will also focus on leveraging our unique Innovation & Best Delivery strategy to deliver excellent client value on matters.

You will liaise directly with partners, lawyers and other business services professionals. You will work very closely with the Asia Pacific Clients & Market Development and Brand, Communications and Marketing team which consists of over 35 members across our eight Asia Pacific offices.

This is a central, hands-on role yet strategic thinking role that requires a considered individual who can lead the team and deliver value across every aspect. Key attributes are a genuine enthusiasm to be a part of a busy team, an ability to prioritise, willingness and ability to take ownership of tasks with strong attention to detail.

You will be credible, engaging and considered, with the ability to build relationships across many levels of business. You must be a proven collaborator, a strong team player and be comfortable taking ownership of the tasks at hand. You must be driven, resilient, genuine and committed. You will know how to jump into the operational detail and how to step back to lead the team and advise the business.

The successful candidate must have experience in developing clients, sectors, practice areas and markets, preferably in law firms. Ability to innovate and improve existing processes is highly valued.

Key responsibilities

Strategy: clients and products:

  • Lead the development of short and long term strategic plans for South East Asia which align with the broad goals of the Asia Pacific Region and the Firm by assessing present and future needs, market trends, risks and opportunities.
  • Provide a lead role in revenue generation for the South East Asia and particularly. Identify and co-ordinate cross-selling opportunities across practice areas, sector specialists and relationship partners and encourage partners to win work in teams.
  • Maintain and develop an in-depth insight of our clients’ businesses to enable proactive identification of business opportunities and the delivery of outstanding client service.
  • Institutionalising the client feedback process across the Singapore office.
  • Contribute to all significant pursuits, tenders and proposals in relevant areas positioning our value proposition based upon a clear insight of the client needs, and industry trends; contribute to pricing discussions.
  • Work with partners and Business Services teams to maximise the return on investment from our significant BD and brand investments.

Brand, communications and marketing:

  • Work closely with the regional Brand, Communications and Marketing (BCM) team on defining the South East Asia practice brand in the marketplace, updating key messages as required and developing and executing an appropriate positioning and profile-raising plan.
  • Work closely with the regional BCM team on drafting, managing and producing printed materials and advertising, including invitations, promotional materials, client briefings, publications both in print and electronic systems.
  • Advise lawyers on appropriate materials and correct branding.
  • Coordinate responses to major legal directories and awards.
  • Design, manage and deliver client events.

Operational management:

  • Ensure adequate use and maintenance of key business development infrastructure as relevant to South East Asia e.g. InterAction, MIS, Pandora etc.
  • Lead projects for the function to improve efficiency and effectiveness of the team, and also developing the skills, best practice and performance of the team
  • Driving the initiative to create and implement more effective processes for budget management.
  • Manage distinct additional firm-wide or practice specific projects as required.

Team support and management:

  • Manage, mentor and lead a team of Business Development & Marketing professionals to ensure they are providing consistent and quality support to the firm's partners and clients by setting clear expectations, providing regular feedback and evaluating performance.
  • Encourage a culture of innovation and curiosity. Work with team members to develop new or enhance existing ways of working.
  • Create a fun and fulfilling team environment focused on high performance, value delivery and optimization.

Key requirements:
  • A minimum of 8 years' experience within the business development or marketing function of a professional services firm
  • A track record of developing and implementing business plans and demonstrated ability to convert business initiatives into revenue opportunities
  • Ability to interact with, and engender confidence in, senior stakeholders such as partners and business management; well-developed influencing and presentation skills and be confident, resilient and focus
  • Ability to demonstrate a track record of being pro-active and delivering high quality work both personally and through a team
  • Strong interpersonal and written communication skills, with demonstrated service orientation
  • Excellent project management, organizational and planning skills with ability to prioritize multiple tasks and projects and meet deadlines with the ability to make judgement calls on where to add value
  • The ability to work effectively and co-operatively with senior business development teams, across borders is vital
  • A client centric view and the ability to translate strategic opportunities into actionable plans
  • Strong line management experience including managing a medium sized team and knowing when to delegate operational tasks.
